Book Review: Here I Stand by Amnesty International

“We were scared, but our fear was not as strong as our courage.”
― Malala Yousafzai

A thought-provoking collection of short stories and poems exploring the rights and freedoms we can enjoy in the twenty-first century… and those for which we still need to fight.

A selection of the world’s finest writers for young people – in conjunction with Amnesty International UK – explore the rights and freedoms still lacking in today’s society, covering issues such as gender equality, race hatred, surveillance, identity and freedom of speech.

Wow… is my first thought when it comes to this book. Here I Stand is a collection of stories, poems and illustrations put together by Amnesty International. Inspired by the Universal Declaration of Rights, twenty-five authors and illustrators have created a cohesive collection of really powerful and thought-provoking short stories and illustrations. There is no denying 2016 has been a particularly devastating year; the scale of attacks – on the world stage – grow more frightening every time they happen and what better way to fight for freedom – and equality – than through the young minds of the future.

Upon reading this book, I was reminded of the anger, hate, and intolerance shown by people all over the world – Orlando and Nice are two very sad examples of the pointless destruction of human lives. This anthology explores the sacrifices and struggles faced in achieving basic human rights of people all around the world. It is not an easy read; I found many of the stories quite confronting and they definitely left my mind on overdrive for many days after finishing the book. There were stories that hit close to home and others depict a life I just cannot fathom…. Although they’re stories of pain and suffering, there is an underlying message of hope, a hope for peace and a better future.

Although the individual voices are different, this collection is united by the need to give power to unheard voices, dignity to those who continue to fight and get knocked down and to give value to human life. Here I Stand is a must read for everyone.
