Book Review: Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

Has anyone noticed this whole city is looking for us, mad at us, or wants to kill us?”
“So?” said Kaz.
“Well, usually it’s just half the city.”
Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

After pulling off a seemingly impossible heist in the notorious Ice Court, criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker feels unstoppable. But life is about to take a dangerous turn – and with friends who are among the deadliest outcasts in Ketterdam city, Kaz is going to need more than luck to survive in this unforgiving underworld.

If I’m really honest, I love a lot of books. I can’t help it; there are so many amazing stories in the market. Fantasy is one of my happy places and Leigh Bardugo’s EPIC Six of Crows duology is firmly placed at the top of my favourites list. I love everything about this series which meant that Crooked Kingdom was one of my most anticipated releases for 2016!

At the end of Six of Crows, we left Kaz Brekker and his motley crew of thieves and criminals having just attempted an impossible heist. Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Wylan, Matthias, and Nina are back in Ketterdam, weakened, under-resourced and fighting for their lives. War is raging on the streets and Kaz and the team must fight and scheme together if they’re going to survive.

Everything I loved from the first book continued through the second; the tight and clever plot, the banter and the relationships, both romantic and platonic. The characters are still fabulous. Bardugo continues to tell the story from six points of view; this allows the reader to connect with each character and see the story from different angles. The characters are all so different and yet they complement one another perfectly; they accept each other’s differences and work with their strengths and weaknesses. They each tell their own story and I love how they grow into themselves!

Despite not wanting the story to end, the duology works perfectly for this story! Book one reveals the action and book two wraps it all up. There is no unnecessary padding; everything in the story is there for a reason. Bardugo’s writing is SO enjoyable! The plot is tight and the story is a perfect combination of menace, tension, darkness and intensity yet there is plenty of light too with flirting, laughter, and teasing!

Bardugo enthralls and delights her readers and I cannot rave about this duology enough. Every time I think of it, I cannot wipe the grin off my face. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom are brilliant – they won’t disappoint! Enjoy J
