“The last time they were together, it was late evening and they were being followed. “It’s happening again,” said Kate…
– Lauren James, The Next Together
A powerful and epic debut novel about fate and the timelessness of first love. Katherine and Matthew are destined to be born again and again. Each time their presence changes history for the better, and each time, they fall hopelessly in love, only to be tragically separated. How many times can you lose the person you love? For Matthew and Katherine it is again and again, over and over, century after century. But why do they keep coming back? How many times must they die to save the world? What else must they achieve before they can be left to live and love in peace? Maybe the next together will be different…
Does anyone else feel a strange sense of pleasure when you discover that the main character in the book you are about to read shares your name? I feel that it happens so infrequently that I enjoy seeing my name splashed all over the pages! The Next Together by Lauren James is a really sweet story about a love that transcends time and history.
Katherine and Matthew are destined to live their lives, over and over again. Meeting through various points in time, they are reincarnated and manipulated to come together to change the course of history. They live through the Jacobite siege of Carlisle of 1745, the Crimean War in 1854 and a university setting in 2019 and 2039. There is an unknown source monitoring their every move, helping them to fulfil the objective they were sent to complete.
What I like most about this story is the way it is put together. Told through a series of newspaper articles, blog entries, video transcripts, handwritten notes and the usual narrative, the reader is able to piece together Katherine and Matthews journey. We are aware that there is someone pulling the strings, trying to manipulate the timelines to a successful conclusion.
The Next Together is a blend of contemporary romance, historical and science fiction. The romance between Katherine and Matthew is sweet and passionate in every reincarnation and the time lines blend together really well. I really like the concept of the story but I found the ending rather confusing; I’m not entirely sure I understand what James was trying to do. In saying this, it was an easy and thoroughly enjoyable read! The writing flows well and the characters are likable in all their forms; by the end of the book you are cheering them on, hoping they will find their happily ever after!
