Book Review: Once Upon A Cloud by Claire Keane

“Just as she was about to fall asleep, the Wind blew in and carried her away, up, up, up into the sky!”

– Claire Keane, Once Upon A Cloud

I haven’t done a review for a picture book before however when this one finally arrived, I just HAD to share it! This stunning piece of art is the jaw-dropping debut by Claire Keane, artist extraordinaire!

Weeks ago I was told of a picture book that was being published in the States by the artist who designed the murals in the animated Disney film, Tangled. As a lover of all things Disney, I made sure it was on my wish list! Keane comes from a very talented family; her father worked at Disney as a visual development artist and is responsible for bringing to life my childhood favourites The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. Working on Tangled provided Keane with the inspiration for her children’s picture book Once Upon A Cloud.

Celeste wants to give her mother something special but she struggles to come up with the perfect gift. As she goes off to sleep that night, the wind sweeps her off into the clouds where she is welcomed by the stars, read to by the moon, and she drinks tea with the sun. When she returns to her bed in the morning, she is inspired by her journey and her new friends to create the perfect gift.

Keane’s beautiful story explores the importance of dreams and the subconscious. Like many others, Keane believes that the subconscious plays a large part in our every day lives and through our dreams we may find ways to problem solve, create and inspire. Once Upon a Cloud is an absolute joy to hold and read and I guarantee it will set imaginations alight everywhere it goes, for both the young and the young at heart!
