Book Chat: What have you been reading?

Hello everyone!

It has been a wonderful few weeks in the book world! There have been two big announcements made! The long list for the fabulous Stella Prize was revealed and it is a really exciting mix. If you haven’t heard about it before, it’s a new award named after one of Australia’s most iconic female authors – Stella Maria ‘Miles’ Franklin – and it celebrates both non-fiction and fiction female writers in Australia. I am going to make an effort to read as many of these books as possible! Watch this space!

Foreign Soil by Maxine Beneba Clarke (Hachette)

The Strays by Emily Bitto (Affirm Press)

Only the Animals by Ceridwen Dovey (Penguin)

This House of Grief by Helen Garner (Text Publishing)

Golden Boys by Sonya Hartnett (Penguin)

The Invisible History of the Human Race by Christine Kenneally (Black Inc)

The Eye of the Sheep by Sofie Laguna (Allen & Unwin)

The Golden Age by Joan London (Random House)

Laurinda by Alice Pung (Black Inc)

Nest by Inga Simpson (Hachette)

Heat and Light by Ellen van Neerven (UQP)

In My Mother’s Hands by Biff Ward (Allen & Unwin)

The second announcement was made by Harper Collins when they revealed there is to be a sequel to one of the most loved books ever written, To Kill A Mockingbird, 55 years after its debut! Needless to say there are some very excited readers waiting for its release!

It has also been an exciting week with my own reading! I was lucky enough to read Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty – chosen for my book club – and I absolutely loved it. It is the first of her books I have read and I really loved the way she writes! She is eloquent, funny and can put together a very enjoyable story. The second book I have thoroughly enjoyed is book two in Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoners series, Firefight. As a lover of Marvel movies, this series is the book equivalent and they are exciting and smart – evil superheroes is just my thing! It is the perfect series for young readers who are reading above their age!

Over to you – what have you been reading?

  1. A feast of reading over the holiday season – my favourites were All the bright places; The haunting of Lily Frost; How to save a life; and the Ruby Red series. I also really enjoyed Big little lies. Was bored by Hello from the Gillespies. Found the book – We are completely beside ourselves, memorable. At the moment I am reading, and really enjoying, Ghost house by Alexandra Adornetto and this morning I have been given The Girl on the Train, very, very excited to read this novel.

    • Hi Sandra, Glad to see you squeezed in lots of reading over the break! I have been looking at the Ruby Red series. I didn’t like We are Completely Beside Ourselves – I wasn’t able to connect with any of the characters. I was surprised when it was nominated for the Man Booker!

  2. Glad you are back Bookkat you have been conspicuous by your absence. I’m reading “The Best Short Stories from 2014”. The annual compilation from “Black” Inc, will go on to their “Best Essays” next.
